Mountain drama at Königssee: 62-year-old falls fatally 100 meters!
Early on Monday afternoon there was a tragic accident while hiking on the Sagerecksteig near Schönau am Königssee. A 62-year-old man from Middle Franconia fell about 100 meters down a steep gully and suffered serious injuries. Despite immediately alerting the emergency services, he succumbed to his injuries on site. This is reported by the Augsburger Allgemeine.
The mountain hiker was traveling with his wife and had previously visited the Kärlingerhaus. The wife, who was not physically injured, suffered shock after the incident and was flown into the valley in a mountain rescue rescue helicopter. A total of eleven emergency services from the Berchtesgaden and Chiemgau mountain rescue services were on site to carry out the rescue. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. when the man lost his footing and fell into the depths.
Dangers when hiking
Although the Sagerecksteig is scenically attractive, it poses considerable risks when it is wet and if you are not sure-footed. Experts advise hikers to exercise caution, especially on steep terrain, and to realistically assess their own fitness and equipment. Many incidents occur in the region every year. According to the South German newspaper The mountain rescue services in Berchtesgadener Land carry out several hundred operations per year.
Accidents like this often lead to discussions about hiking safety and awareness of the challenges the mountains present. It is hoped that hikers learn from such tragic incidents and exercise necessary caution to avoid similar misfortunes in the future.
