Adventure and Francis: Children's tent camp at Schönau Monastery ended!
More than 20 children between the ages of 8 and 12 took part in the camp at Schönau Monastery in the Main-Spessart district these days. The event, organized by the Franciscan Minorites, lasted four days and took place in extremely good weather. The children experienced a varied program centered around the Canticle of the Sun by St. Francis of Assisi, which was written 800 years ago.
During their stay in the picturesque monastery on the banks of the Franconian Saale, the young participants took part in various activities. In addition to the “chaos game,” they were able to live out their creative skills in craft workshops. Brother Konrad Schlattmann and his team taught the children the importance of the Sun Song for today. The theater evening was particularly exciting, in which the children performed small plays and took on the roles of Francis and Clare of Assisi and their first companions.
A place steeped in history
Schönau Monastery has a long and eventful history. Originally founded as a Cistercian monastery at the end of the 12th century, it was abandoned in 1564 after military conflicts. A revival took place in 1699 by the Franciscan Minorites, led by Brother Kilian Stauffer. In the following years, the monastery was renovated in the Baroque style and in 1704 the relics of Saints Viktor and Antonin were transferred to Schönau, which sustainably promoted pilgrimage to this place.
The monastery church itself is an art-historical gem that houses works by the Franconian Baroque painter Georg Sebastian Urlaub from the late 17th century. There are also works of art from the Riemenschneider workshop, which was built around 1500.
Positive feedback and outlook
Finally, many of the participants expressed their wish to take part in the camp again next year. The event not only provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience nature and engage with an important cultural heritage, but also to make valuable friends and discover their talents.
In summary, it can be said that the tent camp in Schönau Monastery was not only a leisure activity, but was also an important and educational experience for the young participants. pow.bistum-wuerzburg.de as well as kloster-schoenau.de give a deep insight into the unique atmosphere and history of this special place.
