Mitsubishi hits cyclist in Leipzig: seriously injured man goes to hospital!

On Thursday morning there was a serious traffic accident on the Schleußiger Weg bridge over the Elster flood bed in Leipzig. At the Beipert Bridge, a driver driving a black Mitsubishi ignored a red light and collided with two cyclists. The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. when the police received the order to deploy. At least one cyclist was seriously injured in the collision and had to be flown to hospital in a rescue helicopter. The condition of the injured cyclist is currently unknown, while another cyclist fell from his bike in the accident but did not suffer serious injuries.

The immediate response of the rescue workers led to the closure of Schleußiger Weg and Rödelstrasse between Altranstädter Strasse and Wundtstrasse to enable the accident to be recorded. This closure lasted until around 12:30 p.m. The traffic accident service has already launched an investigation into the road traffic hazard against the driver, who endangered the safety of other road users by ignoring traffic rules.

Statistical background on bicycle accidents

Accidents like this shed light on the worrying development of road safety for cyclists in Germany. According to current accident research studies conducted by insurers, collisions between cyclists and drivers are often associated with serious consequences. In 2023, there were 5,112 seriously injured people and 178 deaths in such accidents. In comparison, solo accidents involving no other road users have also increased alarmingly: these have more than doubled in the last 15 years and account for a significant proportion of the total.

The steady rise in dangerous situations for cyclists can be attributed in part to the increasing popularity of cycling, particularly among older people. Many cyclists who have had accidents cite inadequate infrastructure as the main cause. The UDV therefore calls for the removal of curbs at crossings and a sufficient distance from tram tracks. More than two-thirds of cyclists say their riding style contributed to the accidents, with many riding too fast for the conditions.

The tragic incident in Leipzig is an example of the dangers that lie in wait for cyclists, especially in the winter months. In poor weather conditions such as wet, ice and snow, the risk of accidents increases significantly, which underlines the need for a safe and well-developed cycling infrastructure.
