Exchange box in Lene-Voigt-Park: Temporary closure due to vandalism!

In the Lene Voigt Park in Reudnitz-Thonberg, the “Lenes Tauscho” exchange box has been under lock and key since Friday. Locked with boards, this is a short-term measure that became necessary after increasing litter in the park. Initiator Aaron Krautheim explained that the decision was made due to the tense situation, while residents had expressed their concerns about the condition of the surrounding area. These concerns led to indications that the city of Leipzig might dismantle the box.

The exchange box was set up in 2021 to promote neighborly exchange and give people the opportunity to exchange items they no longer need for free. “Lenes Tauscho” is part of a network of numerous exchange initiatives in Leipzig that make it easier to give and take used items such as clothing, books and toys. These initiatives contribute to sustainability and help conserve resources, which is visible in various districts of the city, as listed at Leipzig Leben.

Littering and vandalism

The owner is responsible for the measures surrounding the exchange box as it is located on private property. Krautheim plans to report on the problems to the South-East City District Advisory Board next Tuesday, emphasizing that the exchange with the city is going well. There is hope that “Lenes Tauscho” can possibly reopen on Tuesday or Wednesday. The locking boards are mounted so that they can be quickly removed if necessary.

The exchange box has repeatedly been the target of vandalism in the past. A particularly serious incident occurred in May 2023 when the box burned down. However, thanks to the support of donations, it was able to reopen quickly. Another fire occurred at the end of March 2024 after the box was equipped with more robust steel plates, which enabled it to be put back into operation quickly.

Variety of exchange initiatives in Leipzig

In Leipzig there are a variety of exchange cabinets and boxes located in different parts of the city. The particularly frequented places include, for example, the exchange cabinet on the Entenbrücke in Schleußig or the exchange box on Comeniusstrasse in Neustadt-Neuschönefeld. Not only are these facilities convenient places to exchange items, but they also foster a sense of community among local residents.

Other notable exchange initiatives include:

  • Tauschschrank in der Erich-Zeigner-Allee (Schleußig) – Platz für diverse Tauschwaren.
  • Tauschschrank am Gemeindehaus der Marienkirche (Stötteritz) – wetterfest und gepflegt.
  • Lebensmittelschrank beim Goase e.V. – Fairteiler für überschüssige Lebensmittel.

The large number of exchange cupboards and boxes in Leipzig shows that the concept of sharing and passing on is widely accepted, and it is to be hoped that “Lenes Tauscho” will soon be part of this network again.
