New life for Riedelstraße: support wall is being renovated in a listed manner!

From Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the city of Leipzig begins with the new building and repair of the listed support wall in Riedelstrasse in the Reudnitz-Thonberg district. This measure is urgently necessary because the approximately 128 -meter -long support wall, which was built in 1915, is heavily damaged and no longer safe. The original construction is a design that is often used to secure cutting and dam browsing to ensure stable traffic routes and water. L-iz.de reports that about 81 meters of the support wall are stopped, while the remaining 47 meters are repaired.

The replacement building of the retaining wall is based on the original design of the cultural monument, so that the historical substance is largely preserved. In 2016, the original concrete parapet was already replaced by a construction fence, which illustrates the precarious situation. The adjacent lane of Riedelstraße is reduced and paved to a width of 4.60 meters during the construction work. For pedestrians and cyclists, there are access to the construction site during the entire construction period.

Construction work and redesign

Before the actual new building, the Leipzig waterworks and the Leipzig network will flipped the lines required. The construction work is on a total duration until spring 2027 and cost a total of around 4.6 million euros. An important aspect of the measure are the newly planned barrier -free crossing aids, also known as sidewalk noses, which are attached both at the beginning of the building and at the end of the construction and halfway on Riedelstrasse.

The sidewalks of Riedelstrasse are widened to a width of 2.50 meters, while parking facilities are reduced. About half of the existing parking space is eliminated, which means that future parking facilities are only available on one side along the southern sidewalk in the direction of Eilenburger Strasse. In this context, new bicycle brackets and lean bars for cargo bikes are also installed.

Green areas and tree felling

In order to make room for the excavation pit, 16 street trees have to be felled and two large trees have to be transplanted. Nevertheless, the entire project will also set new green accents: a total of 18 new street trees with continuous substrate strips are planned. In addition, two trees and other plantings around the Alfred Frank and Möbiusplatz are created in the Lene Vogt Park. This corresponds to modern urban planning requirements and promotes the improvement of the city size.

The decisions in the context of the retaining wall as well as the measures to ensure traffic and accessibility are against the background of the constant requirements for quality assurance of construction projects in urban areas. Supporting walls, such as those in Riedelstrasse, are essential for stability and must therefore be planned and maintained particularly carefully, as general information on retaining walls and their functionality wikipedia.

Overall, this construction project represents an important step to secure the city's infrastructure, which is also intended to meet the requirements for contemporary traffic and urban design. Leipzig's citizens can look forward to the changes that Riedelstraße will experience through this extensive renovation.
