RB Leipzig relies on Ole Werner: Is the Werder coach coming?

Things are currently turbulent in Leipzig, especially at RB Leipzig, which is looking for a new head coach. The search intensified after Marco Rose was relieved of his duties at the end of March. Now the eyes are on Ole Werner, who is considered the favorite for the coaching position after other alternatives have been eliminated.

The situation surrounding Jacob Neestrup, the coach of FC Copenhagen, brought some clarity. The Dane has not received clearance to move to Leipzig after FC Copenhagen officially announced that Neestrup will remain as head coach next season. This was highlighted by a press release from the club, which also stated that Neestrup will return for the first day of training on June 22, 2025. Requests from RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg were rejected, which takes one potential option for Leipzig out of the running. According to kicker.de, both Leipzig and Wolfsburg have shown great interest in Neestrup, but FC Copenhagen still see him as a key person for the upcoming season.

Ole Werner as new hope

Instead of Neestrup, those responsible at RB Leipzig could now rely more on Ole Werner. Intensive discussions with the former Werder Bremen coach have already taken place in the last few days. Werner is interested in working together, and an agreement could result in a manageable fee as he is tied to Werder until 2026. He has proven that he can work successfully with limited resources, which would be an advantage for Leipzig.

Last season, Werder Bremen achieved 51 points under Werner - the same number as the more expensive team from RB Leipzig. This speaks for his ability to develop the team and motivate the existing players. In addition, Werner is very familiar with the Bundesliga and the language, which is another advantage over Neestrup.

The trainer search in Leipzig

So far, those responsible at RB Leipzig have also been looking for other coaches. Discussions were held with Sebastian Hoeneß, Roger Schmidt, Oliver Glasner and Cesc Fabregas, but no agreement was reached. The decision-makers at Cottaweg are therefore under pressure to find a new coach as quickly as possible to lead the team back on the road to success.

Ole Werner could currently lead RB Leipzig into a new era after other candidates were unavailable. The next few days could be crucial for the coaching question in the Saxon metropolis, and the fan community will be following the developments with excitement. It is clear that RB Leipzig needs a fresh face in the coaching bench next season in order to meet expectations in the Bundesliga and possibly also on the international stage.
