RB Leipzig welcomes Ole Werner: new coach with big plans!
RB Leipzig has presented Ole Werner as their new head coach. The 37-year-old took up his new position for the first time on Tuesday and brought his assistant coach Tom Cichon with him to Leipzig. Werner, who comes from Werder Bremen, signed his contract while on holiday in Africa. The discussions about the terms of his transfer had been successfully concluded. Werner succeeds Marco Rose, who was released in March 2025 after winning the DFB Cup with Leipzig in 2023. Despite this success, the team disappointed in the Bundesliga and was eliminated early from the Champions League.
After Rose was fired, Zsolt Lőw took over responsibility on an interim basis, but was unable to achieve international business. Werner has been working at Werder Bremen since 2021 and successfully led the team back to the Bundesliga in 2022. His announcement of his departure from Bremen in May 2025 came after failed contract negotiations. Werder Bremen finally parted ways with him one day after his announcement. For Werner's move to Leipzig, the club has to pay a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros, plus performance-related bonuses of up to 500,000 euros.
The first day in Leipzig
On the first day in his new role, Werner and Cichon visited the academy, the office and the training ground of RB Leipzig. The first discussions with team management have already taken place. Patrick Kohlmann, the second assistant, is expected in Leipzig in the evening. The coaching team will be temporarily accommodated in a hotel, while squad planning is scheduled to begin on Wednesday with the sporting leadership under Marcel Schäfer. The dates for summer preparation have already been agreed via video link.
Ole Werner brings extensive experience in German football. Before his time at Werder Bremen, he was a coach at Holstein Kiel and has proven in the past that he can lead teams successfully. His hiring is seen as a necessary step to get RB Leipzig back on the road to success.
Werner's taking office ends the longest tenure of a coach at RB Leipzig, which Marco Rose held from September 2022 to April 2025. The official introduction of Ole Werner by the club is still to come. RB Leipzig sees Werner as having the ideal conditions to both overcome the immediate challenges and be successful for the future season.
