Dramatic events have occurred in Ukraine in recent days, further exacerbating the already tense relationship between Russia and Ukraine. Russia launched a massive attack with 479 drones on Ukraine on the night of Sunday, June 2, 2025, in what is believed to be the largest drone attack on the country since the start of the war. This attack targeted at least four known Russian air bases, including Ivanovo, Diagilevo, Olenya and Belaya, located more than 4,200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, becoming known as the first Ukrainian attack in Siberia since the invasion began.
Ukrainian offensive and resistance
The Ukrainian offensive included 117 first person view (FPV) drones that were secretly transported near the bases. The operation was 18 months in the making and showcases Ukraine's strategic planning, which has now demonstrated several of its offensive capabilities. According to estimates by the Ukrainian secret service SBU, this operational success destroyed 40 Russian combat and reconnaissance aircraft, including important models such as the Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-22. The estimated damage to Russia is approximately $7 billion, underscoring the impact of this offensive and highlighting the importance of this military action.
Russia responded to the attacks by confirming “terrorist attacks” and reporting damaged aircraft. Criticisms from media and military bloggers about the loss of their strategic bombers speak to the internal tensions in the Russian military, while President Zelensky praised the Ukrainian attack as a “brilliant action” and highlighted its operational preparation as exemplary. However, the connection of these attacks with the ongoing negotiations in Istanbul was considered unlikely, as such offensive operations require a long preparation.
These developments illustrate the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which continues to vary in extent and intensity. The international community remains concerned about the humanitarian and security implications of this war, while both countries continue to adapt their military strategies.
