On Thursday, 23-year-old central defender Jan Stein completed his first training session with 1. FC Lok Leipzig. His signing was announced the evening before and is causing excitement, especially at his former club, Viktoria Aschaffenburg. Stein, who is 1.88 meters tall and can also be used as a right-back and in defensive midfield, signed a one-year contract until the summer of 2026. This is reported by LVZ.
Sporting director Toni Wachsmuth explained that Stein had not signed a new contract with Viktoria Aschaffenburg and was therefore available for other clubs, including Lok Leipzig. He described Stein's performance in recent years as consistently good and expressed confidence that the newcomer would fit well into the team. Coach Jochen Seitz confirmed this assessment and emphasized that Stein meets the player profile that is currently needed.
Reactions from Aschaffenburg
However, the reactions from Aschaffenburg are critical. Sandro Sirigu, Viktoria Aschaffenburg's sporting director, was surprised at the change. He emphasized that Stein had previously announced that he wanted to play for the club while he was studying in the USA or, in the event of a rejection, would want to stay for his studies. Aschaffenburg finds the nature of the transfer unfortunate and does not see the obligation as being in line with Stein's statements.
Before Stein's move, Lok Leipzig only had two central defenders in the squad: Lukas Wilton and Laurin von Piechowski, who were regular players last season. The squad will now be significantly strengthened by Stein, especially since Lok Leipzig will be playing in the Regionalliga Nordost next season and will need more depth.
In addition to Stein, trial players have also been training since Monday. These include Rilind Kabashi and goalkeeper Oskar Preil. Other trial players include Tjark Hildebrandt, Jonas Saliger and Max Böhnke. These players are scheduled to play in the first friendly against Stahl Brandenburg on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The final decisions on any permanent commitments are expected to be made next week.
On Thursday, goalkeeper Andreas Naumann was missing due to professional commitments, but goalkeeper Niclas Müller, who was without a club, was integrated into training by Lok goalkeeping coach Tomislav Piplica.
