In recent days, several mailbox explosions in Leipzig have caused excitement and outrage among residents. The incidents took place in the districts of Holzhausen and Mölkau, where four mailboxes were destroyed with brute force. The destruction of the mailboxes has raised serious questions about security and the postal system in these neighborhoods. The mailbox in Mölkau was secured with red and white police tape, while the mailbox in Holzhausen was in the bushes. Residents reported their outrage at the “senseless and frightening” incidents. So far there is no information as to what happened to the letters and other contents from the destroyed boxes. In addition, Deutsche Post AG stated that no replacement for the damaged mailboxes had yet been organized.
Investigation and Responses
The police have now started investigations into property damage, but so far there is no concrete information about the perpetrators. The investigators rely on the support of the public in order to shed light on the incidents. Meanwhile, residents in Holzhausen noticed that the loss of the mailbox could not have been noticed by the postal workers, as it is emptied every day at 9 a.m.
Similar damage to property with explosive materials was recorded in August. On August 16th at 11:50 p.m., unknown people damaged a mailbox at the Leipzig-Südost police station with pyrotechnics, indicating a possibly increasing trend in the region. The Medienservice Sachsen reports that the resulting property damage was estimated at around 300 euros. In this case, the police took immediate measures to secure possible leads and search for the responsible perpetrators, but were also unsuccessful.
The incidents raise serious questions about the security arrangements and protection of public facilities. A trend of such violence could become a major problem and increased security presence and preventive measures may be necessary.
In view of the successive incidents, the demand for faster reactions from Deutsche Post AG and the police is not only understandable, but also urgent. Residents in the affected areas want security and a quick replacement for the damaged mailboxes so that they can continue to count on reliable postal services.
