Allotment gardens 2025: Leipzig’s best gardens honored!

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the “Allotment Gardens of the Year 2025” were honored in Leipzig. This honor took place as part of the annual “Garden Day”, which was organized by the Leipzig allotment gardening associations and the organizing association with various partners. The event was opened by politicians Heiko Rosenthal, Ralf-Dirk Eckardt and Heiko Allelein.
The award recognizes the commitment of the volunteers, the quality of the common areas as well as the activities to protect the environment and promote integration in the district. LeipzigInfo reports that the prize is endowed with 1,000 euros and gives the winners the opportunity to plant a volunteer tree according to their type and location.

The winners of the different categories are:

category winner
I (up to 75 gardens) “Seehausen” allotment garden association
II (76 to 200 gardens) “Theklaer Höhe” allotment garden association
III (over 200 gardens) Association for Natural Health Care

Volunteer awards

In addition to the award for the allotment gardens, outstanding volunteers were also honored. Brigitte Ahlert (Miltitz am See allotment garden association), Ernst-Jürgen Schwank (Waldessaum allotment garden association) and Holger Große (Culture allotment garden association) were recognized for their special achievements in their role as board members. The L-IZ emphasizes that each of these honorees will be presented with a tree, the type and location of which will be determined together, as a token of recognition.

In his speech, Heiko Rosenthal emphasized the immense importance of allotment garden culture in Leipzig. With over 39,000 plots, spread across a total of 272 allotment gardens, these are not only retreats for relaxation and leisure activities, but also make a decisive contribution to the urban climate and social integration. The allotment gardens not only offer city residents the opportunity for self-sufficiency, but also stimulate neighborly cooperation.

A look at the allotment garden plantings shows how lively the allotment garden sector is in Leipzig. Last but not least, voluntary commitments are also recognized here, which make many of the gardens into blooming oases. The handover of the volunteer trees takes place in the presence of representatives of the allotment gardeners and club members. Such events not only strengthen the community, but also show how important allotment gardens are in Leipzig's urban landscape.
