Krefeld fire brigade in constant operation: lightning, storms and major fires!

On the weekend from May 31st to June 1st, 2025, the Krefeld fire department was confronted with several demanding operations. A major fire in a workshop at a motor vehicle company in Dießemer Bruch was the focus on the afternoon of May 31st. At 3 p.m., the fire department received the alarm that the company was fully engulfed in flames, which led to a visible column of smoke and triggered a large number of emergency calls. Up to 120 firefighters from the professional and volunteer fire departments were deployed to fight the fire and deal with the immediate danger. The extinguishing work lasted until the evening hours and required the entire on-site effort.

After the fire, a thunderstorm cell moved over downtown Krefeld, reaching around 10 p.m. The adverse weather conditions brought squalls, heavy rain and hail, which caused significant damage in several parts of the city. The districts of Lindenthal-Gatherhof, Stadtmitte, Cracau, Dießem, Bockum and Oppum were particularly affected.

High number of emergency calls and missions

The city of Krefeld recorded over 600 emergency calls relating to full basements, fallen trees and fallen branches. A large part of the main roads became impassable due to the weather, which called the city's emergency response team into action. A total of around 250 operational sites had to be processed, which required the mobilization of around 400 emergency services. This included not only local units, but also support from external forces from the surrounding districts of Kleve, Wesel, Rhein-Kreis-Neuss and the city of Duisburg.

The city of Krefeld would like to expressly thank all the organizations and aid workers deployed for their tireless efforts and quick response to the threatening situations. The coordinated cooperation of all those involved played a crucial role in minimizing the effects of natural forces. Particularly noteworthy is the performance of the Krefeld fire department, which once again demonstrated its professionalism and commitment in this record operation.
