Leipzig celebrates variety: Jewish week enthusiastic from June 15th to 22nd!
Leipzig, Deutschland - The 16th Jewish week in Leipzig is just around the corner and takes place from June 15th to 22nd, 2025. Organized by the cultural office of the city of Leipzig and the Ariowitsch-Haus e. V., this week will offer numerous events and encounters around Jewish life and culture in the city. Over 100 events in which more than 60 institutions are involved should present a wide range of Jewish art and culture. This event is organized every two years and has established itself as an important part of cultural life in Leipzig. Leipziginfo reports that the Ariowitsch-Haus will act as a central place for many of the encounters.
The opening ceremony will take place on June 15th in the Höfe am Brühl, a place with historical importance for Jewish life in Leipzig. City chief Burkhard Jung and Küf Kaufmann, the CEO of the Israelite religious community, will open the week. Musical accents set the orchestra sounds of hope and the singer Karolina Trybała. A public commemoration of Channa Gildoni in the memorial of the large community synagogue will also take place on the opening day. This memorial event is accompanied by the Leipzig Synagogal Choir under the direction of Philipp Goldmann.

The festival program offers a variety of formats: concerts, readings, films, lectures, contemporary witness talks, exhibitions as well as theater and dance performances are offered. An outstanding example is the round of talks "to be forgotten. Jewish portraits from the Leipzig photo archive Mittelmann", which takes place on June 19 at the Grassi Museum of Ethnology. In addition, on June 22, the 4th tour of tolerance will take place with an inter -religious brunch in the Rosental, followed by a bike tour to significant stations of Jewish life in Leipzig.
Another interesting program item is the Schaubühne Lindenfels, which will present the guest performance "Noir Haas" from the twin city of Brno on June 26. In this piece the fate of the Jewish brothers Pavel and Hugo Haas are discussed.
Jewish life in Leipzig
Leipzig has the largest Jewish community in East Germany in Berlin. This lively and active community is emphasized by the Jewish week. The organizers and contributors want to promote and make the Jewish life of the city visible. Current information on the events is available on the website of the city of Leipzig, and program booklet can be found in all participating venues as well as in the new town hall and in the tourist information. The program will be provided online and as a print version from May 26, 2025. Ariowitschhaus adds that the Jewish community is actively involved in the events and numerous institutions are contributed to the variety of the event.
