Traffic changes in Vechta: Safety for pedestrians at Stoppelmarkt!

The city of Vechta is planning a comprehensive change to traffic routing during the Stoppelmarkt, which takes place from August 14th to 19th. As vechta.de reports, a section of the streets Holzhausen and Dornbusch between the market area and the bus station will be closed. This measure is intended to increase the safety of pedestrians, as they are considered particularly vulnerable road users.

In order to further improve safety for pedestrians, car traffic towards the city center will no longer be permitted in the future. Arrival and departure traffic by car will be reorganized and relocated to the east of the market area. However, all parking spaces remain accessible, which is a relief for visitors.

Road safety in focus

The mayor of Vechta, Kristian Kater, emphasizes the importance of regular checks of security measures. This initiative is in line with the recommendations of experts who emphasize that pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users and are therefore exposed to particular risks, especially children, the elderly and people with reduced mobility. According to a publication by the German Road Safety Council, many accidents involving cars are recorded in places where pedestrians cross streets. This often includes intersections and junctions that have been identified as problem areas.

In addition to the road changes, the city of Vechta will promote the use of local public transport. Shuttle buses in particular have seen an increase, showing that many citizens are considering alternative means of transport. The closure of the streets was coordinated in close consultation with the police, the medical service and the fire department in order to ensure a safe supporting program during the festival.

Practical regulations during the stubble market

Traveling by car is still possible via Holzhausen from the Nordtangente or Bergstruper Straße as well as via Oyther Straße and Im Kühl. Parking spaces 9 and 10 can also be reached via Kühl and Eichelweg. A one-way street regulation on Hof to Aite and Thesings Kreuz will also be adjusted so that in future only departure traffic in the direction of the Nordtangente will be permitted.

The city will continue to make the taxi stand on Hof to Aite available to taxi drivers, while emergency vehicles will continue to be allowed to use Holzhausen and Dornbusch streets. The city of Vechta appeals to all road users to exercise particular caution and mutual consideration during this time to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

These measures are a further step towards a safer transport infrastructure, with the city incorporating and implementing the findings to improve pedestrian safety, as recommended in further publications by the German Road Safety Council.
