Holzhausen celebrates: funfair and village charm are the focus of the district!
In the Holzhausen district, one of the quiet and idyllic areas of Georgsmarienhütte, the traditional Holzhauser fair will take place from September 19th to 22nd, 2025. The district currently has 4,469 inhabitants and is therefore slightly smaller than the neighboring Oesede Monastery, which has 4,505 inhabitants, but larger than Harderberg with 3,055 inhabitants. The local community has a strong bond and many long-time residents live harmoniously together with newcomers.
The history of the district is marked by an interesting division. Until 1970, Holzhausen and Sutthausen formed a common municipality under the name Holzhausen. The southern part joined Georgsmarienhütte, while Sutthausen turned towards Osnabrück. In this context, city spokesman Niklas Otten noted that the separation is no longer noticeable today. This reflects the close-knit community characterized by the civic engagement and solidarity of citizens.
The Ohrbeck Monastery: A center of the community
A central element of the Holzhausen community is the Ohrbeck Monastery, which has been a defining part of the townscape for almost 100 years. The connection between the monastery and the population is strong: the Holzhausers actively support the monastery, for example through bee-friendly garden design. The “Holzhauser leben” association describes the area as a “district with a village character,” which is also confirmed by the great local connection.
The beginnings of the monastery go back to 1918, when the first Franciscans arrived in Holzhausen. The founding of the monastery was approved in 1917, and the first church service took place shortly afterwards. Historically, the monastery was also the target of attacks during the Nazi era, with church activities being severely restricted before the monastery was rebuilt after the war. Today it functions as a Catholic adult education center and is used by many Holzhausers in everyday life.
Community life and fair
Various clubs, associations and groups have come together with a “Holzhauser Runde” that meets twice a year to actively shape community life. A common concern for everyone involved is to create a central contact point for all generations. In recent years, however, there have been repeated voices saying that such a starting point is missing. The fair in Holzhausen is a welcome opportunity to strengthen the community and celebrate village togetherness.
Sonja Middelberg from Hasbergen praises the people in Holzhausen: “They are friendly people and a beautiful place,” which reflects the positive impressions of many visitors. The civic engagement, the monastery's traditions and the village character make Holzhausen a special place in the region.
