Major construction site on Dieskaustraße: completion delayed until 2028!
Construction work on Dieskaustraße in Leipzig, which connects the Knautkleeberg urban area with Plagwitz, is progressing. The second construction phase, which includes extensive renovations and improvements to the traffic infrastructure, ends on June 27th between Antonienstrasse and Kulkwitzer Strasse. Much of this section is considered complete, with completed work including new roadways, sidewalks and marked cycle lanes designed to improve road safety. In addition, new parking areas will be created, a guidance system for the blind will be installed and new street lighting will be installed. As part of this project, 22 new trees will be planted in the fall, which will benefit the green design of the district.
Another point of the construction work is the replacement of around 1.5 kilometers of drinking water pipes and almost 900 meters of sewage pipes. The closure of the section from Kulkwitzer Straße to the velodrome remains in place and is scheduled to be completed in 2023. Until then, traffic will be redirected via Windorferstrasse and Altranstädter Strasse. The rail replacement service for tram line 3 will also remain active after June 27th in order to compensate for mobility-related restrictions among citizens.
Planned future sections and cost increases
The next construction phases have already been planned: In 2026, the section between Huttenstrasse and Bismarckstrasse will be tackled, followed by the section between Bismarckstrasse to the velodrome, which is scheduled to be completed in 2027. In 2028, the old track loop on Pörstener-/Kötzschauer Straße will be renewed. The project was originally expected to be fully completed by 2027, but is now aiming for completion in 2028.
Construction costs have also increased and are now expected to amount to 30.25 million euros, an increase of 8.5 million euros compared to the original plans. This increase in costs is associated with lower funding from the Free State, which leads to higher contributions from the city of Leipzig.
Additional work and diversions
Directly related to the Dieskaustraße construction site is the closure of Brückenstraße in the south-west of Leipzig, which has been closed since Monday due to further construction work. This work is part of the comprehensive infrastructure project and costs a total of 2.2 million euros. The plan is to renew the lighting, the guidance system for the blind and the sidewalks.
The closure is expected to last until November 10th and will result in large-scale traffic diversions. Drivers will be redirected via the S46 Rippachtalstrasse. Other alternative routes via Koburger Straße, Wundtstraße, Schleußiger Weg and Altranstädter Straße are also signposted. Bus and train traffic will also be affected by the measures, with bus route 65 being split up. It now runs between Markranstädt and Großzschocher as well as between Markkleeberg, S-Bahn station and Cospudener See.
