Large construction site on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße: closure until September!
From Friday, June 28, 2025, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße in Leipzig will be fully blocked for several months. This measure is part of a comprehensive construction project that includes the renewal of the tram tracks, overhead lines and the renovation of gas, water and district heating lines. In addition, the cycle paths and lanes are renewed. The overall investment for these extensive work amounts to around six million euros, such as MDR reports.
The preparatory work has already started in mid -May. At first the blocking was planned for the end of May, but was postponed to the end of June due to construction sites of the waterworks, which significantly influenced planning. Concrete construction measures are carried out between Körner- and Kurt-Eisner-Straße until around mid-October 2025.
Details on the construction work
The construction phase will bring closures for adjacent cross streets that become temporarily to be dead ends. However, residents have continuous access to their houses. Delivery traffic is also largely maintained. Important information is provided on the website of the Leipzig Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB).
The tram traffic of lines 10 and 11 is affected by the full closure. A rail replacement traffic will be set up, which begins at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and runs to the Südplatz. During the construction work, line 10 will end at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and return over Rossplatz, while line 11 in the south continues and the construction site deals with the detour of line 9.

The extensive work also includes the renewal of track systems over a distance of 550 meters, the renewal of 430 meters drinking water pipes and the renovation of sewers. The completion of the project is planned for September 28, 2025, and the companies involved are trying to keep the impairments for residents and commuters as low as possible.
