Major construction site on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße: closed until September!
From Friday, June 28, 2025, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße in Leipzig will be completely closed for several months. This measure is part of a comprehensive construction project that includes the renewal of the tram tracks, the overhead lines and the renovation of gas, water and district heating pipes. In addition, the cycle paths and roadways will be renewed. The total investment for this extensive work amounts to around six million euros, as MDR reports.
The preparatory work began in mid-May. The closure was initially planned for the end of May, but was postponed to the end of June due to construction work at the waterworks, which had a significant impact on the planning. Specific construction work will be carried out between Körner- and Kurt-Eisner-Straße until around mid-October 2025.
Details about the construction work
The construction phase will result in closures of adjacent cross streets, which will temporarily become dead ends. However, residents have continuous access to their homes. Delivery traffic will also largely be maintained. Important information about the route closure is provided on the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) website.
Tram traffic on lines 10 and 11 is affected by the complete closure. A replacement rail service will be set up, which starts at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and runs to Südplatz. During construction work, line 10 will end at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and return via Rossplatz, while line 11 will continue to the south and bypass the construction site via the line 9 diversion.
Expected limitations
According to information from L-IZ, residents must expect hourly restrictions in the drinking water supply during this period. There will also be diversions for several bus routes, including lines 60, 74 and N60, which will be rerouted between Fockestrasse and the streets mentioned. The restrictions also affect the Karl-Liebknecht-/Kurr-Eisner-Straße stop, which will only be served in the direction of Lipsiusstraße/Holzhausen for a certain period of time.
The extensive work also includes the renewal of tracks over a distance of 550 meters, the renewal of 430 meters of drinking water pipes and the renovation of sewers. Completion of the project is scheduled for September 28, 2025, and the companies involved are striving to minimize disruption to residents and commuters.
