Several exciting film and series productions were made in Leipzig and the surrounding area in 2023. Another interesting production is“The Girl with the Leica”, which is narrated by photojournalist Gerda Taro. Filming took place in central Leipzig in September and the film is scheduled to be released in cinemas in 2024.

The cast of the film includes talented actresses and actors such as Emilia Schüle (33), Aaron Altaras (30) and Luna Wedler (26). Gerda Taro, who was born in Stuttgart, spent part of her youth in Leipzig, where she attended the Gaudig School and was actively involved in politics. Her photographs of the Spanish Civil War have attracted international media interest, although during her lifetime her work was often overshadowed by her partner Robert Capa. It is noteworthy that Taro was the first woman to photograph on a war front, a milestone in the history of photography.

The legacy of Gerda Taro

Gerda Taro, real name Gerta Pohorylle, was born on August 1, 1910 in Stuttgart and was the eldest daughter of a Jewish merchant. Not only did she become famous during the Spanish Civil War, but she is also considered the first woman to take photographs on a war front. Political motivation and ties to the labor movement shaped her work. After fleeing to Paris in 1933, she met Robert Capa, with whom she documented wars.

Taro tragically died on July 26, 1937, when she was run over by a Republican tank while documenting the Republican offensive in Brunete. Her photographs, which often depict the plight of Spanish refugees as well as everyday life during the war, have received increasing posthumous recognition. There are several streets named after her in Leipzig and Stuttgart to honor her legacy and influence on photography. Only in recent decades has her extraordinary contribution to photography and the role of women in photojournalism been recognized.

The connection between the film industry in Leipzig and the history of important personalities like Gerda Taro shows how art and memory can intertwine. The films and series produced here not only keep the memory of important historical figures alive, but also illustrate the importance of telling stories that shape society.
