FC St. Pauli under pressure: RB Leipzig is chasing coach Alexander Blessin!

FC St. Pauli may be facing another coaching change. After Fabian Hürzeler was sold to Brighton last year, Alexander Blessin, the club's current coach, could now be the focus of RB Leipzig. Leipzig has been looking for a new coach since Marco Rose was fired at the end of March. Blessin was mentioned as a potential successor a few weeks ago, but responded to the speculation with a smile.

In the last few days, there has been an increasing number of interested parties for the coaching position in Leipzig. The initial favorites, Cesc Fabregas (AC Como) and Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace), have been joined by Blessin as a national alternative and an international candidate. According to transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri, there are already talks between Leipzig and Blessin. Jürgen Klopp has spoken out internally in favor of the coach, fueling rumors of a possible signing.

Uncertain future for Blessin

Although Blessin has stated that he feels comfortable at St. Pauli, he has not given any concrete assurances about the future. Sports director Andreas Bornemann said he believes Blessin will remain coach of FC St. Pauli, but emphasized the uncertainty in the football business. Blessin's history at RB Leipzig, where he was brought in by Ralf Rangnick and spent eight years in the youth team, could make him appear suitable for the current line-up.

The 52-year-old, born on May 28, 1973 in Stuttgart, has been manager of FC St. Pauli since July 1, 2024. His average tenure as a coach is just 1.29 years. Equipped with a UEFA Pro License, Blessin prefers the 3-4-3 formation and has had some success in his coaching career so far, including a time at Union SG with 2.07 points per game.

Coach change: A look at history

Coach changes are not uncommon in German football. Since the 1963/1964 season, countless coaches have been replaced in the 1st Bundesliga. This development is documented by Statista and illustrates the dynamics and volatility in professional sports. It remains to be seen what decision RB Leipzig will ultimately make and whether Blessin will actually become the club's future coach.
