The 35th Euro-Scene Festival will take place in Leipzig from November 4th to 9th, 2025. This important event presents a varied program with 14 international guest performances, including two world premieres and three German premieres. The festival director Christian Watty has chosen the leitmotif “Love Body Politics”, which addresses the human body as a place of strength, vulnerability, power and self-determination. This topic also serves as a reflection of social conflicts.

The festival begins on Tuesday at the Leipzig Opera with the performance collective Caravan of Luv performing a concert titled “Healing Hate.” The aim of this performance is to propagate love as a political practice and as a sign against hate. In another significant piece, “Slow Walk” by Compagnie Rosas, participants move 2.5 kilometers through the city in four hours, reflecting on the human body and its politics.

Highlights of the Euro scene

Particular highlights of the festival are a variety of performances that address explosive social issues. “Me too, Galatea” by Pol Pi addresses the #MeToo movement and patriarchal images of women. Manuel Roque will perform “Le Vent se lève” and “Bang Bang”, while Steven Cohen will present the world premiere “People will People you”. This interactive performance proposes a dialogue with the audience and is seen as a declaration of love to Leipzig.

A first-time co-production with the Festspielhaus Hellerau will be the performance “The Seas between us” by Fang-Yun Lo, which examines the influence of political systems on thoughts and actions. This representation comes up in the context of discussions about anti-Semitic tendencies. Last year there were incidents with the Freedom Theater that prompted the Saxon Ministry to examine “legal funding implications,” which ultimately led to the cancellation of the event.

Social relevance and art

The human rights organization Freemuse lists the incident as an example of the censorship of pro-Palestinian perspectives. Christian Watty comments on this issue and emphasizes the role of artists as experts in change and improvisation in times of crisis. At a time when social conflicts are becoming ever louder, the Euro-Scene Festival offers a platform for critical discussions and creative expressions. The event is expected to attract large crowds and stimulate discussion on important social issues.

The Euro-Scene Festival therefore not only stands for artistic innovation, but also for an important contribution to the social debate about the challenges of today.
