Insight into the organ landscape of Saxony

Saxony is one of the most important organ regions in Germany. With over 2,500 organs, of which more than 130 historical instruments from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved, the region offers a fascinating look back at the history of organ building. The origins of this organ landscape lie in the late Gothic period, and an independent Saxon tradition emerged in the 17th century. Famous organ builders such as Gottfried Silbermann, Kreutzbach, Ladegast and Schmeisser worked in this region and created numerous organs for posterity. Wikipedia explains that the oldest documented organ in Saxony dates back to 1298, which is located in the St. Peter's Church in Görlitz.

The “Faszination Organ” tour combines musical experiences with handicrafts and regional history. Historic organs, whose structural and sound features are presented during the tour, attract music lovers and those interested in culture alike. A free brochure entitled “Faszination Organ” is available from the Leipzig Tourist Information Center. This brochure provides valuable information about the organs in the region as well as upcoming concert highlights.

Restoration and preservation

An important aspect of the Saxon organ landscape is the continuous restoration and preservation of historical organs. In modern times, there are numerous projects dedicated to the restoration and reconstruction of these valuable musical instruments. Many organs have been carefully restored to preserve their sound quality and structural integrity. The Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Saxony and the Dresden University of Music have created online inventories of the organ inventory.
