Darkly surprised: First German European parallel bars champion since 2012!

Nils Dunkel surprisingly won the parallel bars title at the European Gymnastics Championships in Leipzig. The 28-year-old gymnast from Halle scored an impressive 13,900 points and was happy about his first title in this discipline. This makes him the first German European parallel bars champion since Marcel Nguyen in 2012. Timo Eder from Ludwigsburg, who became European champion together with Karina Schönmaier in the mixed team, won the bronze medal in the parallel bars competition with 13,700 points. Ian Raubal of Switzerland secured the silver medal with 13.766 points, and Dunkel and Eder shared the podium.

While the competition was successful for Dunkel and Eder, Dunkel had previously only achieved 5th place in the all-around final, which makes his achievements on the parallel bars all the more remarkable. Eder and his mixed team partner were also able to score points in the team final, where they won the title together.

Historic success for the German gymnasts

Another highlight of the tournament weekend was the success of the German gymnasts, who won a silver medal at a European Championships for the first time. The young team, consisting of Helen Kevric, Janoah Müller, Lea Quaas, Karina Schönmaier and Silja Stöhr, showed an outstanding performance and impressed with courage and team spirit.

Italy won the gold medal with 161.930 points, while Germany achieved 158.396 points and France took third place with 156.728 points. Helen Kevric particularly stood out by achieving the best score on the uneven bars with 14.766 points. Karina Schönmaier also received recognition by qualifying for the floor and all-around finals.

Outlook for further competitions

The European Championships are still ongoing, and as part of the competitions, Andreas Toba has the chance to win a medal on the high bar before ending his career. More exciting decisions are also expected in the coming days, including finals in vault, beam and floor exercise. The event is watched with great interest as athletes from all over Europe compete for medals.

Overall, the European Championships in Leipzig was a great success for the German gymnasts, who went home with a total of several medals. The achievements of Dunkel and Eder, coupled with the historic success of the women's team, show the potential of German gymnastics at an international level.
