Henrichs' comeback: Will the DFB star soon be fit again for Leipzig?
Benjamin Henrichs, the 28-year-old defender from RB Leipzig, is counting down the days since his serious injury. Shortly before Christmas 2022, in the big game against Bayern Munich, he tore his Achilles tendon, an injury that put him out of action for the rest of the season. The incident occurred in stoppage time when Henrichs went down without any intervention from an opponent and had to be treated immediately. He was no longer able to get up on his own and was taken away on a stretcher. The diagnosis of a rupture of the right Achilles tendon was confirmed the following day, which was not only a shock for Henrichs, but also for the entire team, as sports director Marcel Schäfer explained. At that time, Henrichs was out for the rest of the season after previously playing in all 15 league games and six Champions League games.
Henrichs is currently on vacation on the Turks & Caicos Islands and is using the time to relax and recharge his batteries. In an interview, he reported progress in his recovery and is optimistic that his comeback is imminent. “I’m looking forward to being back on the pitch,” said Henrichs. Sports boss Schäfer expressed his confidence that the returnee will be fit for the start of training: “If the return is delayed, we would have enough time for long preparation before the start of the Bundesliga.”
Contract and team integration issues
Benjamin Henrichs, who has a contract with RB Leipzig until 2028, recently hired a new consultant - the “Sports360” agency. His mentality is valued internally and he should play an important role as a leader within the team. This could be particularly important during the team integration phase, as Henrichs speaks several languages and can therefore support new players. These qualities make him not only a central part of the team, but also a key person in the process of integrating new talent.
Henrichs' return could also be a significant reinforcement for RB Leipzig as the team is in the midst of a very competitive Bundesliga season. The team as a whole sees his commitment as valuable, especially after the heavy defeat against Bayern, in which they lost 1:5, as also mentioned in the report from kicker.
With a positive development in his rehabilitation and the support of his teammates, Henrichs is determined to return as quickly as possible and help continue RB Leipzig's positive development. All eyes remain on the further course of his recovery and the upcoming season.
