Scam in Wermsdorf: Over 40,000 euros lost!

On June 15, 2025, several notable events were reported in the Leipzig and Wermsdorf area, which put both the police and fire departments on alert.

A serious case of fraud became known in Wermsdorf, which took place from May 20th to June 14th, 2025. A woman in her 50s and her husband in his 70s fell for a supposed cryptocurrency trading portal. This was preceded by registration on this platform in May 2025, followed by multiple telephone contacts from various people. This resulted in a request to transfer several hundred euros to a foreign account, including permission for remote access to her computer. Ultimately, the two transferred over 40,000 euros, financed by a loan, in the hope of quick profits, which never materialized. The fraud was only discovered after the money was lost, whereupon a report was filed. Such fraud cases, which are classified as “cryptocurrency fraud”, are constantly increasing in Germany. Victims have the right to compensation and should contact the relevant law enforcement authorities for support, according to the Federal Criminal Police Office.

Fires and traffic accidents

Another incident occurred in Leipzig, where a fire broke out in a partially used warehouse on Fabrikstrasse at 11:50 a.m. on June 14, 2025. The fire brigade was quickly on site and was able to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. A drone was used to extinguish the fire to get a better overview of the situation. Despite the extensive damage that put the building in danger of collapsing, there were no injuries. Parts of the building had to be demolished in order to carry out the firefighting work effectively. The fire investigator is called in to investigate the causes of the fire.

A serious traffic accident occurred on the same day at 5:30 p.m. on federal highway 87 in Eilenburg. A 46-year-old driver of a van lost control and collided with an oncoming car. Both vehicles suffered serious damage; the van tipped to the side while the Hyundai rolled over and landed in the adjacent field. The drivers of both vehicles and a passenger were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The property damage is estimated at around 37,000 euros, and the B87 was closed for several hours. Investigations are underway against the driver of the van for negligent bodily harm. DEKRA experts were called in to support the accident investigation.

Denigration of the state

In addition, in Leipzig on June 14, 2025, at around 8:00 a.m., denigrating posters were discovered in display cases in the city center. The posters, which were related to Veterans Day 2025 and were conceptually similar to Bundeswehr advertisements, caused material damage of around 1,000 euros because the display cases had to be opened by force. Investigations into defamation of the state and damage to property were initiated and some posters were confiscated.

Overall, these incidents highlight the challenges faced by police and other authorities in the region. Citizens are urged to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to protect the community.
