Man falls drunk into magpie pool – dramatic rescue operation!

On Tuesday afternoon, a 37-year-old man fell into the Elster basin in Leipzig. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. on Cottaweg in the Zentrum-West district. Eyewitnesses reported that the man was obviously very drunk. The rescue workers quickly rushed to help and were able to get him out of the water alive. An emergency doctor was on site to provide first aid, who then provided him with medical support. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. More detailed information about how the accident happened is not yet known, which makes the police investigation more difficult. This is not the first incident of this kind in the Magpie Basin.

There have been shocking discoveries on this body of water in the past. On April 22, 2016, walkers found the mutilated body of a woman near the Landau Bridge. Most of the torso was in the water. The Lützschena-Stahmeln volunteer fire department was involved in the rescue. Further searches in the reeds resulted in a leg being found, while a shoe was discovered about 100 meters away. The police cordoned off the area and carried out forensic investigations, while the identity and circumstances of the woman's death remain unclear to this day. Investigators assume it was a homicide. There is also historical context in another case: in 2011, 23-year-old Jonathan H. was discovered in the Elster basin, killed and dismembered by an acquaintance. The perpetrator was sentenced in 2013 to 14 years in prison and subsequent psychiatric hospitalization. Jonathan H.'s head has not yet been found.

Rescue operation and aftermath

The rescue of the 37-year-old man represents another worrying episode in connection with the Elster basin. The authorities are called upon, both with regard to the safety of citizens and to clarify the incidents. While the investigators are currently not releasing any further details in the case of the man's serious injuries, the population remains somewhat alarmed about the incidents in this body of water.

The Elster Basin, a popular leisure area, could become less attractive if the public safety aspect is not addressed soon. The connection between a celebrating audience and proximity to water requires special attention to prevent tragic accidents and repeat crimes in the future.
