Chapels on the cycle path: Film shows impressive wooden sacred buildings!

An interesting project has taken shape in the Swabian Danube Valley: Over the past few years, seven architects have designed seven prayer and prayer rooms along a cycle path. These unique wooden sacred buildings were built between 2018 and 2020 and are now part of a special documentary that will be shown on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the Kino der Jugend (Eisenbahnstrasse 158). The film is part of the “Architecture in Film” series, which was initiated by the Center for Building Culture Saxony (ZfBK) and the city of Leipzig.

The documentary, produced by Jens Weber and Orla Connolly, not only captures the impressive visual design of the chapels, but also highlights people's reactions to these constructions. In addition to the excellent images, Wolfram Oettl's musical compositions play a crucial role in rounding off the film experience. As part of the event, at 6 p.m. there will be an input from Nora Gitter and Winfried Endres about the renovation of the cinema in the east of Leipzig, before the film is shown from 7 p.m.

Architectural details and further information

The film focuses on the materials of the chapels, the lighting conditions, surfaces and views as well as the embedding of the buildings in the surrounding nature. It also shows how both mundane and inspired reactions of visitors to this form of architecture are documented. The architectural firms that were involved in this project include Staab, Mäckler and Pawson, which indicates a high architectural level.

Important note for spectators: Due to renovation work at the Youth Cinema, both seating and comfort at this event may be limited. Visitors are also required to wear construction helmets, which will be provided in the cinema.

The “Architecture in Film” series takes place regularly, with a new film being presented once a month. The next date has already been set: the film “The Garden” by Derek Jarman will be shown on August 12, 2025. Further information about the event series is available online at www.leipzig.de/netzwerk-baukultur available.

Admission is free for the screening of the film “7 CHAPELS” on June 17th as well as the later film series, which also makes the offer attractive to a broader public. This not only promotes an understanding of architecture, but also opens up access to contemporary themes and aesthetics of building culture.
