Jewish week in Leipzig: Experience culture and celebrate diversity!
The 16th edition of the Jewish week begins today in Leipzig, which lasts until June 22, 2025. Under the motto "shaping coexistence", the organizers, including the cultural office of the city of Leipzig and the Ariowitsch-Haus, as well as over 60 partners, want to promote the visibility of Jewish life. The event has developed into an integral part of the city's cultural calendar since its premiere in 1995. More than 100 different events take place at different locations in Leipzig to address a wide audience, including those interested in culture, families, students, historians and curious people. As reports ahoi-leipzig.de, the program includes a variety of cultural events. The program ranges from concerts, including Klezmer, synagogal music and classic works by Jewish composers, to theater and dance performances. Readings and conversations with authors and contemporary witnesses offer guests a platform to deal with Jewish history and culture. Workshops, city tours and exhibitions are also part of the offer, which is supplemented by culinary encounters with Jewish cuisine. The Ariowitsch-Haus in the Waldstraßenviertel acts as a central event location, while museums, libraries, schools and theater are also involved in the program, as the Ariowitsch-Haus informs on its website.
variety of events
The Jewish week is not only an opportunity to meet Jewish culture, but also a platform for personal stories and historical insights. At the events, the history of Jewish life in Leipzig is discussed, which looks back on an almost 800-year tradition. The city is home to the largest Jewish community of East Germany to Berlin. One of the highlights of the week is the city tour "Jewish Life in Leipzig", which will take place on June 22nd. This leadership takes the participants on a route through the Waldstrasse district, which was formerly a center of Jewish merchants, and addresses the persecution and destruction of Jewish life, including at the memorial of the Great Synagogue.
In addition to historical city tours, a visit to the Brodyy Synagogue is also offered to provide insights into religious and social community life. Koschere specialties in the Ariowitsch-Haus are also offered, which enable the participants a culinary connection to Jewish culture. The aim of the Jewish week is to discover and shape Leipzig as a city of memory and cultural exchange. The dialogue and communication create a space for diversity and common learning.
Events in English are also offered for international guests. The commitment of the more than 60 Leipzig institutions and clubs, including synagogues and museums, reflects the multifaceted contribution to the city's cultural identity. Further information on the events and the program can be found on the website of the Ariowitsch-Haus and at leipzig.de.
