Farewell to the Natural History Museum: Large exhibition on taxidermy!

The Leipzig Natural History Museum, one of Saxony's most important cultural institutions, is facing an exciting turning point. The temporary exhibition “The House with the Spider – Part 1: Preparation” will open on June 6, 2025, marking the start of a large series of farewells to its previous location on Lortzingstrasse. This exhibition is the first part of an eight-part series exploring the history of the museum and its diverse collections. Visitors can experience interactive stations in the exhibition, such as a taxidermy desk, and thus gain direct insight into the techniques of taxidermy. These experiences provide an exciting opportunity to see taxidermists' skills up close and are part of the museum's dedicated service to the public.

The topics of the farewell series

The first part of the exhibition will be on display until October 26, 2025. Future subject areas in the series are promising and range from botany, geology and paleontology to archaeology, museum education and digitalization. Visitors are offered a wide range of knowledge about nature and its magnificent facets, such as Saxony tourism supplemented.

The Leipzig Natural History Museum also documents the local nature, flora and fauna, habitats and the settlement history of the region. It is a place of research and education that is characterized by the voluntary work of many citizens. These voluntary collections form a valuable natural archive that looks at the last 10,000 years of natural-cultural history and depicts the interactions between people and the landscape.

A particular focus of the Natural History Museum is on educating people about regional biodiversity. The collections include valuable exhibits that support scientists in their research. This also includes important finds from the Tertiary geological era, which offer interesting perspectives on the climatic changes of the last 50 million years. The museum serves as an important educational site, particularly for children and young people, and has over 17,000 printed items in its library that are available to the public.

Ceremonial opening

All interested parties are invited to the ceremonial opening on June 6, 2025; the two events offer an insight into the exhibition concept. From 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. there will be a live taxidermy of a snowy owl by experienced taxidermist Louisa Bosse. From 5:00 p.m., museum director Prof. Dr. Ronny Maik Leder the official opening.
