Inheritance Law Day in Leipzig: Interesting facts about compulsory portion and will!

On Monday, November 17, 2025, the first Inheritance Law Day will take place in the city library at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz 10-11 in Leipzig. The Leipzig Community Foundation is organizing this event in collaboration with the Leipzig City Library in order to provide interested citizens without basic legal knowledge with valuable information on the subject of inheritance law. The event begins at 3 p.m. in the library's skylight room and entry is free. Registration is possible via the foundation's website or by telephone.

The event program includes several rounds of parallel lectures by experts dealing with various aspects of inheritance law. In addition to the necessity and design of a will, the right to the compulsory portion, obtaining a certificate of inheritance and the decision between refusing or accepting an inheritance are also discussed. Another focus is on the possibilities for avoiding inheritance taxes and determining legacies for a good cause. During the lectures there will be the opportunity to ask questions, although individual consultations are not provided. For further information or personal advice, appointments can be made with local experts.

The compulsory portion in inheritance law

A central theme of Inheritance Law Day will be the compulsory portion, which, according to legal provisions, can exist for certain heirs, such as children and spouses. The claim to a compulsory portion can be determined using a compulsory portion calculator, whereby the estate value must be determined precisely. The heirs must prepare an estate inventory that includes all assets, liabilities and relevant gifts. Those entitled to a compulsory portion have a right to information in order to obtain the necessary information.

The compulsory portion is calculated according to a specific scheme. For example, with an estate value of 500,000 euros, the entitlement to a compulsory portion for one child is 250,000 euros; for two children, the entitlement is reduced to 125,000 euros per child. Important aspects, such as the inclusion of gifts and the effects of the marital property regime on the entitlement to a compulsory portion, will be explained on this day. In particular, donations that took place within ten years before the testator's death must also be taken into account when calculating the compulsory portion.
