Witzke freaks out: Farewell to Leipzig after an unhappy home game!
Handball player Luca Witzke is leaving SC DHfK Leipzig after six years and moving to SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the summer. This became known during his last home game for Leipzig on June 4, 2025, which began with a disappointing false start of 5:9 after 14 minutes. Despite the unfortunate situation, coach Runar Sigtryggsson decided to take a break early on in order to re-motivate the team and give tactical instructions. Witzke didn't mince his words and loudly criticized his teammates: "It's shit what we're all doing here. [...] Let them throw it out."
Luca Witzke, born on April 3, 1999 in St. Hubert, Germany, plays in the position of central backcourt player. He began his career at Hülser SV in Krefeld and then played in his youth for TV Aldekerk, ART Düsseldorf and TUSEM Essen. In the 2018/19 season he scored 98 goals for TUSEM Essen before moving to SC DHfK Leipzig in the summer of 2019. Since then he has established himself in the first handball Bundesliga and was a key player for his team.
Career and international success
Witzke made his debut in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga in 2018 and was one of the outstanding talents in German handball. He took part in 18 junior international matches and won the bronze medal with the U20 national team at the 2018 European Championships in Celje, Slovenia. Despite an injury that cost him his participation in the 2019 U21 European Championships, he was called up to the senior national team in October 2019, but was set back by a broken nose during a training course.
In January 2020, he was the youngest player in the 28-man squad for the European Championships and made his debut against Portugal in a friendly on November 5, 2021. He took part in two games at the 2022 European Championships, but had to withdraw from the competition early due to a positive COVID-19 test. Nevertheless, he showed his skills at the 2023 World Cup by scoring 20 goals and finishing 5th with the DHB selection.
Upcoming goals
Witzke will continue to be the focus of the handball community, especially with a view to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where he won a silver medal with the German team and was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 4, 2024. After the 2025 World Cup, where the team failed in the quarter-finals and finished 6th, his move to SG Flensburg-Handewitt will represent a new challenge. The move is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2025 and promises to take the talented backcourt player's career to new heights.
Witzke's emotional and impulsive behavior in the last home game underlines his passion for the sport and the expectations he has of both himself and his teammates. The fans in Leipzig will certainly remember the player's passionate performances and successes during his time at SC DHfK.
