Witzke rests: Farewell to Leipzig after an unfortunate home game!

Leipzig, Deutschland - The handball player Luca Witzke leaves SC DHfK Leipzig after six years and switches to SG Flensburg-Handewitt in summer. This became known as part of his last home game for Leipzig on June 4, 2025, which started with a disappointing false start of 5: 9 after 14 minutes. Despite the predicament, coach Runar Sigtryggsson decided early for a break to motivate the team and give tactical instructions. Witzke did not put a leaf out of her mouth and criticized his teammates loudly: "This is shit what we all do here. [...] let the throw".

Luca Witzke, born on April 3. 1999 in St. Hubert, Germany, plays in the position of the central back player. He started his career at the Hülser SV in Krefeld and then played in youth for TV Aldekerk, Art Düsseldorf and Tusem Essen. In the 2018/19 season he scored 98 goals for Tusem Essen before moving to SC DHfK Leipzig in summer 2019. Since then he has established himself in the first handball Bundesliga and was a key player for his team.

career and international success

Witzke made their debut in the 2nd handball Bundesliga in 2018 and was one of the outstanding talents in German handball. He took part in 18 junior international matches and won the bronze medal at the 2018 European Championship in Celje, Slovenia with the U20 national team. Despite an injury that cost him participation in the 2019 U21 European Championship, he was appointed to the A national team in October 2019, but was thrown back by a nasal bone break during a course.

In January 2020 he was the youngest player in the 28-seater squad for the European Championships and made his debut against Portugal in a friendly on November 5, 2021. He took part in two games in the 2022 European Championship, but had to leave the competition prematurely due to a positive Covid 19 test. Nevertheless, he showed his skills at the 2023 World Cup by scoring 20 goals and taking 5th place with the DHB selection.

upcoming goals

Witzke will continue to be the focus of the handball community, especially with a view of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where he won a silver medal with the German team and was awarded the silver laurel leaf on November 4, 2024. After the 2025 World Cup, in which the team failed in the quarter-finals and took the 6th place, his move to SG Flensburg-Handewitt will be a new challenge. The change is to be carried out in the summer of 2025 and promises to lead the career of the talented back player to new heights.

Witzkes emotional and impulsive behavior in the last home game underlines his passion for sport and the expectations that he has in both himself and his teammates. The fans in Leipzig will certainly remember the passionate appearances and successes of the player during his time at SC DHfK.
