Dismantling the nuclear power plants: online information event in Neckarwestheim!
An online information event on the progress of the dismantling of nuclear power plants in Baden-Württemberg will take place on May 27, 2025 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The focus is on current developments and the next steps in dismantling, especially at the Neckarwestheim site. This event is organized by EnBW and offers citizens the opportunity to find out about the dismantling and its significance. Participants must register in advance via the Ministry of the Environment's homepage in order to take part in the event. The Green Party Environment Minister Thekla Walker and representatives from the nuclear regulator will also take part in the information event. Jörg Michels, head of EnKK's decommissioning division, will also speak to provide insights into the process that began after the decommissioning of Neckarwestheim II in 2023.
Since the decision to phase out nuclear power in 2011, EnBW has developed comprehensive measures for the dismantling strategy. The company is not only responsible for the dismantling of the five nuclear power plants, but is also actively implementing the energy transition. EnBW Kernkraft GmbH (EnKK), which is responsible under nuclear law, has a completely approved dismantling program for all plants. This makes EnBW the first operator in Germany whose entire nuclear power plant fleet is in the process of being dismantled.
Chronology of dismantling
The dismantling times of the individual nuclear power plants vary, which reflects the different decommissioning dates:
- Obrigheim seit 2008
- Neckarwestheim I und Philippsburg 1 seit 2017
- Philippsburg 2 seit 2020
- Neckarwestheim II seit Mai 2023
All dismantling projects are equipped with a fully regulatory approved dismantling program, with safety being the top priority throughout the entire process. Significant dismantling progress has already been achieved at the Neckarwestheim, Philippsburg and Obrigheim locations. The work is carried out within the framework of the strict safety regulations that must be adhered to when decommissioning and dismantling such systems.
The upcoming information event is intended to increase transparency about the challenges and progress of the dismantling. This is particularly important because the dismantling of nuclear power plants not only represents a technical challenge, but also entails a social responsibility. EnBW invites anyone interested to actively find out about developments and ask questions.
For further information and to register for the event, those interested can visit the website of the Ministry of the Environment, such as Esslinger Newspaper reported. Additional details about EnBW's dismantling strategy can be found on the EnBW website.
