Peter Weck turns 95: A life full of gratitude and memories!
Peter Weck, the unmistakable TV legend, will celebrate his 95th birthday on August 12, 2025. The native of Vienna, who was born in 1930, has been a fixture in the theater and film business for over 75 years. Weck began his impressive career in 1954 with the film “And Heaven Laughs” and became famous with appearances in popular formats such as “Sissi”, “Das Traumschiff”, “Tatort” and especially as Werner Schumann in “I Marry a Family”. The latter series, which ran from 1983 to 1986, enjoyed great success and left a lasting mark on German television history. Thekla Carola Wied, his former colleague in this series, sent him warm congratulations and said in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper that Weck will live on in her thoughts.
In his 95th year, Peter Weck describes his age as an “extremely grateful gift”. This becomes particularly significant as he suffered a stroke in early 2022, which affected his ability to speak. After six weeks of rehabilitation, his health is stable and he has regained his mobility, albeit limited. For his birthday, Weck will be surrounded by his children Barbara and Philipp and his partner Joanna Rzepa in a restaurant in Vienna. The mayor of Vienna is also expected to attend the celebration, which underlines the importance of the occasion.
A life full of successes
During his career, Peter Weck staged numerous successful musicals and is considered the “father of the German musical renaissance”. He took over the management of the Theater an der Wien in 1983 and brought hits such as “Cats” and “The Phantom of the Opera” to the stage. He received more than 40 awards for his services, including notable honors such as two Bambis, three Golden Cameras and the platinum “Romy” for his life's work. On the occasion of his birthday, the ORF is dedicating a program focus to him, in which numerous films and documentaries about his life and work will be broadcast, including “Peter Weck – The Eternal Sonny Boy” and “Peter about Weck”.
Weck often reflects on his many roles and the challenges that come with age. Despite his health limitations, he is grateful for the experiences his long life has given him. Although he admits that he “sometimes forgets who I am,” his passion for art and entertainment remains undiminished. The celebrations in his honor not only represent his impressive life's work, but also the deep appreciation that his colleagues and fans hold for him. His legacy in the entertainment industry will endure for a long time.
