CO2 emissions in Baden-Württemberg: Historical decline with challenges!

In 2024, Baden-Württemberg recorded a decline in CO2 emissions to around 61.1 million tons, which corresponds to a decline of around 2.3 million tons or 3.6 percent compared to the previous year. This represents the third decline in a row and reaches a historical low, as reported.

Compared to the reference year 1990, the reduction is even 33 percent, equally 30 million tons of CO2 equivalents. However, a further reduction of 29.2 million tons of CO2 equivalents is necessary to achieve the country's climate goals by 2030, as the data from the State Statistical Office show. The main reason for the decline is economic factors, especially a weak economy.

emissions from different sectors

The emissions of industry fell by 4.8 percent to around 9.1 million tons of CO2 equivalents. This acceptance is due to the sunken production in industry. In the energy sector, CO2 emissions fell by about 10 percent due to the reduced use of hard coal and the increased proportion of renewable energies, which increase 5.2 percent to a maximum, adds statistics-bw.de.

The greenhouse gas emissions in the traffic sector were 19.8 million tons of CO2 equivalents in 2024, which is only a decrease of 0.2 million tons (–0.8 percent) compared to the previous year. While emissions in freight transport fell by 2.8 percent, emissions in car traffic rose slightly by 0.4 percent. These developments show a slight downward trend in road traffic since 2022, supported by increasing electromobility.

challenges and demands

In order not to endanger the positive developments, the Minister of Environment and Energy Thekla Walker from the Federal Government demands that the Federal Government take measures to support the energy structure in Baden-Württemberg. Industry in the state is investing in its own wind and solar parks for independent energy supply. This could make an important contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases and support the achievement of the climate goals.

The decline in CO2 emissions is a positive sign, but the effort must be continued to achieve the ambitious climate and environmental goals. The development of emissions in the various sectors will continue to be observed closely because they are crucial for future energy and environmental policy in Baden-Württemberg.
