Leipzig's construction freeze is causing trouble: the vaulted cellar will reopen in 2026!

Today, the city of Leipzig imposed an investment moratorium, which is valid until the end of June 2026. This means that no new construction projects or construction plans may be started until this point. Prestige projects such as the renovation of the former technical town hall, the construction of the adult education center (VHS) and the music school are particularly affected by this moratorium. Smaller construction projects, such as the redesign of Stephaniplatz, are also being postponed. The exact exceptions to this moratorium are still unclear, but construction of two new houses with wooden facades will begin this week over the old cellar of the Plagwitz vaulted cellar, which is scheduled to reopen from mid-2026, reports LVZ.

The vaulted cellar, which is over 180 years old and once served as a youth club, will be opened to the public again after extensive renovation work. A positive development amid the city's construction delays.

Karliquake: A celebration of street culture

Last weekend, around 10,000 people celebrated the “Karli Beben” festival, which was intended to revitalize Karl-Liebknecht-Straße (KarLi). The festival's slogan, “The KarLi lives, the KarLi trembles,” accompanied events between Kant-Park and Alexis-Schumann-Platz. Originally planned as an event along the entire Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, this concept had to be scrapped due to the ongoing construction work.

The festival took place on September 13, 2025 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and offered a varied program at various venues - including the living room stage at the Kant-Gymnasium and the Waldbühne in the park. Many small shops supported the festival with their own offers to promote the street's cultural and shopping location, informs Leipzig life.

Environment and recognition in the city

However, the celebrations in the city also come with negative aspects. The large number of visitors led to an enormous accumulation of rubbish, which was criticized by both residents and street cleaning services. In addition, the “Brunno” drinking water fountain has recently been located on Leuschnerplatz after it was placed on Augustusplatz for the 2024 European Football Championship. Brunno will remain at its new location until the end of October.

However, the award for Thomas Langkopf, who was named the world's best tram driver at the first world title fights in Vienna, is cast in a positive light. He is used on all Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) bus and train lines, but is currently on vacation. This success brings another highlight for the city of Leipzig and its services.
