Tempo 30 for more safety: Kolmstrasse in Stötteritz is becoming quieter!

From June 16, 2025, a section of Kolmstrasse in Leipzig-Stötteritz will become a 30 zone. With this measure, the city of Leipzig is reacting to the sometimes very high levels of noise pollution that have been identified in this area. According to a recent city release, traffic-related noise levels are 65 decibels during the day and 55 decibels at night, which is above the city limit. These values are not only unpleasant, they can also have health consequences for residents.

The affected section extends between Commander-Pendel-Allee and Holzhäuser Straße. The measure was decided on behalf of the Southeast City District Advisory Board and is intended in particular to increase safety near the Franz Mehring School and the swimming pool. Lower speeds should significantly reduce the risk of accidents for students, pedestrians and cyclists, reports lvz.de.

Objectives of the noise action plan

The introduction of this speed limit is in the context of the third update process of the city's noise action plan. In this plan, 32 urban noise hotspots were identified, including Kolmstrasse. The aim of the plan is to reduce environmental noise and to introduce targeted measures against noise, which are necessary due to nationwide regulations and EU requirements.

In total, the current noise action plan proposes 21 measures to reduce motor vehicle and commercial traffic. These suggestions include, among other things, installing additional speed cameras, adapting traffic lights and using LED boards to control traffic. It is also planned to use noise-optimized asphalt on future construction sites in order to further minimize noise pollution, as tag24.de adds. The costs for the current work to set up the 30 km/h zone amount to around 3,000 euros.
