Renovation of Stötteritzer Straße: Modernization for everyone from 2026!
The renovation of Stötteritzer Straße between Riebeckstraße and Breslauer Straße will begin in March 2026. This is reported by the Leipzig Internet newspaper. The aim of the project is to comprehensively modernize the tram infrastructure as well as improve conditions for cyclists and general road safety.
As part of the redesign, new tracks will not only be laid, but barrier-free stops will also be set up. In addition, the road space will be completely redesigned to meet the requirements of a modern transport infrastructure.
Financing and scope of work
The financing for the renovation amounts to 7.5 million euros. This construction and financing decision was officially confirmed by the city leadership, but the final decision still has to be made by the council meeting. The modernization also includes increasing the track spacing for the new trams that will run between Reudnitz-Thonberg and Stötteritz.
The planned measures to make the stops barrier-free are particularly important. The DIN specifications stipulate that stops must be discoverable and accessible. These include, among other things, sufficient movement areas, barrier-free entrances and exits and clear guidance systems for people with visual impairments.
Traffic, safety and environmental protection measures
Another goal of the renovation work is to reduce noise emissions by introducing a noise-reducing grass track between Kregelstrasse and Riebeckstrasse. This concept ensures that the tram runs separately from vehicle traffic, which also contributes to traffic safety.
Thonberger Straße will be declared a one-way street during construction in order to optimize traffic flow during construction work. It is also planned to install a new traffic light system at the intersection of Papiermühlstrasse and Schönbachstrasse to prevent accidents.
The work also includes replacing the drinking and sewage pipes and improving parking spaces for cyclists. At the intersection of Stötteritzer Straße/Fuchshainer Straße and Hofer Straße, the square area will be redesigned to integrate new benches and a guidance system for the blind. In addition, it is planned to create a mobility station that will enable barrier-free transfers between buses, trains and trams.
Completion and outlook
The extensive work is scheduled to be completed in May 2027. This means that residents and road users could benefit from a significantly improved infrastructure that not only takes into account the requirements of today's mobility, but also addresses the needs of people with disabilities.
