Seehausen: Tragic bridge collapse during Corpus Christi procession!
On June 19, 2025, a serious accident occurred during the traditional Corpus Christi procession at Lake Staffelsee in Seehausen when a wooden pedestrian bridge collapsed. The accident occurred at a time when many devotees were gathering on the eastern bank to take part in the procession. The bridge, which was open to visitors, could not support the weight of several people, causing several wooden pillars to give way and the bridge to partially collapse. A total of two people were injured, including a 79-year-old man from Seehausen and a 72-year-old vacationer from Thuringia. The elderly man suffered a head laceration and neck pain while he was under the bridge in his rowboat. The holidaymaker fell with her back onto a support pillar and was slightly injured. Both were taken to the Murnau accident clinic, where the 79-year-old has since been released. The injuries were classified as moderate and minor.
The bridge was recovered on July 31, 2025 using a truck crane to inspect the debris. An expert, criminal police officers, skilled workers and Markus Hörmann, the first mayor of Seehausen, were on site. The investigation into the cause of the accident is now underway and a report is being prepared. A first indication of the cause could be a badly damaged wooden support on the side of the bridge, which may have represented a crucial weak point. In order to check the suspicion of material fatigue, some debris was seized. The remaining part of the bridge has been cleared for removal, but after dismantling a gap remains in the boat landing; a temporary solution is not planned.
Damage and effects
The material damage to the bridge is estimated at around 15,000 euros. At the same time, the collapse represents a significant disruption for the local community. It is unclear how many people were actually on the bridge at the time of the accident. The bridge will remain closed until further notice. Mayor Hörmann announced that the local council must decide on the construction of a new bridge, which poses several challenges for residents and participants in the lake procession.
The Corpus Christi procession at Lake Staffelsee, a unique event in Bavaria, usually attracts many believers. The participants, festively decorated, travel on a ferry to the island of Wörth, where they visit a chapel. This year, the misfortune overshadowed the traditional celebration.
