Construction of the A14: soon smooth traffic on the new Elbe bridge!

Construction work on the A14 between Wittenberge and Seehausen-Nord continues to take shape. At an information event organized by Deges on June 12, 2025, current developments in the largest new motorway construction project in Germany were announced, the total costs of which amount to around 2.3 billion euros. The new, 11-kilometer section is expected to be partially opened by mid-2026, while the A14 is expected to be fully accessible by the end of 2027. SVZ reports.

A significant innovation in this context is the construction of a new Elbe bridge, which will have already reached the bank in Saxony-Anhalt at the end of April 2025. This 412 meter long steel structure will be 31 meters wide and is estimated to cost 182 million euros. The old Elbe bridge will be demolished and rebuilt after the motorway opens, which should further improve the transport infrastructure in the region. Deges informed.

Transport and construction projects

The lanes on the B189 in the Altmark are currently narrowed and traffic light regulations with a speed limit of 50 km/h apply. In addition, access to the B195 towards Cumlosen and Lenzen has been closed since April due to the construction of a roundabout. However, Deges project manager Silke Kinner announced that this closure will be lifted from August 2025, which will make access to the region easier.

A temporary lane will be set up to divert traffic on the B189 towards the Elbe Bridge. A new roundabout will also be completed at the intersection of Krähenstückenweg and Beguinenweg by the end of the year. All of this serves to improve traffic management and minimize the detours that many residents complain about, who sometimes have to accept up to 30 kilometers longer journeys to Wittenberge. Deges is therefore examining the planned traffic routing based on various inquiries from residents.

Costs and participation

Around 150 construction workers are involved in the construction work, who will build a total of around 2.1 million cubic meters of soil. The costs for the A14 section between Wittenberge and Seehausen-Nord amount to around 513 million euros. These measures are intended to sustainably improve transport connections in the region and make them future-proof.
