Demolition of the dilapidated B 189 Elbe bridge in Wittenberge – the restart in 2026!

The old B 189 Elbe bridge between Losenrade and Wittenberge is facing its final fate. How az online reported, a comprehensive renovation of the bridge is planned for 2026. However, the A 14 Elbe bridge must be completed before demolition can begin.

The bridge has been under discussion for years because it has significant damage and is limited in its load-bearing capacity. This damage is predominantly due to alkali-silica reactions, which have been known for more than a decade. In addition, wearing parts such as the road surface and the bearings were not replaced for a long time, which further worsened the condition.

Planned and approved

An important document for the renewal is the cease-and-desist notice from the Saxony-Anhalt State Administration Office, which was issued in November 2022. This allows the bridge to be renewed without a comprehensive plan approval or environmental impact assessment. The new construction work must be based on the old design in essential respects and no serious changes to the location are planned.

The design planning for the new building has now been completed. The bridge will be realized as a steel composite deck bridge with various spans from 126 to 160 meters. The carriageway slab consists of an orthotropic cover plate covered with a 20 cm thick layer of concrete. In addition, the foreshore bridge has a total length of around 697 meters, which is to be constructed with prestressed concrete central beams and cantilever slabs.

Dismantling measures and construction time

The old bridge will be dismantled in several steps. First, railings, guardrails, caps and the asphalt surface are removed before the concrete slabs and steel longitudinal beams are dismantled. The entire dismantling of the bridge is expected to take around eight months. An early tender for the construction work is scheduled for August 2025.

The costs of the project will be borne by the federal government, although exact amounts are not yet known before the contract is awarded. After the completion of the A 14 Elbe bridge, traffic on the B 189 will be redirected to it while the old bridge is dismantled. Cyclists and pedestrians will be guided over a railway bridge to the east during construction.

Long-term perspectives

The entire construction work is designed to last three years, so that the new B 189 bridge is scheduled to be opened in autumn 2029. This project represents an important connection between Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg and is of great importance for the region's transport connections. The newly planned bridge will be positioned directly parallel to the A14 motorway.

The traffic forecasts for 2025 already show a load of around 1,000 motor vehicles per 24 hours, which further underlines the need for renewal. lsbb.sachsen-anhalt.de emphasizes that the call for tenders for this planned measure should take place in the third quarter of 2025 in order to sustainably improve traffic conditions in the region.
