Shots in Leipzig: SEK operation after a family dispute on Gorkistrasse!

This Monday morning, May 26, 2025, a 46-year-old man was arrested on Gorkistraße in Leipzig-Schönefeld-Abtnaundorf. The police operation began at around 9:45 a.m. following an emergency call indicating a family dispute. In this context, the man is said to have used a firearm. The police received intensive support from the Special Operations Command (SEK) and the negotiating group of the State Criminal Police Office (LKA). Fortunately, there were no injuries during the operation, which defused the situation in an otherwise dramatic context.

Gorkistrasse once again illustrates how important fast and well-coordinated emergency services are in order to react quickly in potentially dangerous situations.

European Gymnastics Championships and the challenges of the city

In addition to the dramatic situation in Schönefeld, the European Gymnastics Championships, which opened today at the Leipzig exhibition center, are running in parallel. This happens at the same time as the German Gymnastics Festival, which starts on May 29th. The city is expecting around 750,000 visitors to experience the sporting event and the associated celebrations by June 1st. This year, 136 male and 165 gymnasts from 37 nations are taking part, and there will be a mixed team final for the first time in the run-up to the 2028 Olympic Games.

However, despite the positive news from international sporting events, Leipzig also faces challenges in terms of crime. According to reports from the Leipzig public prosecutor's office, a case of billing fraud in connection with corona tests has been solved. Two men aged 32 and 37 are said to have billed for tests worth over 800,000 euros in 2022 that were never carried out. A search warrant to seize assets worth around 1.5 million euros was executed on April 30th.

Gun violence incidents and crime trends

Another incident affecting the safety of citizens in Leipzig occurred on January 10, 2023, when a 38-year-old man fired shots at police after a chase. According to t-online.de, the suspect is said to have approached the police officers threateningly with a cutting weapon. The man was injured by the gunfire and taken to the hospital. This shows the problematic development of crime in the city, which is highlighted by a few individual incidents, but should be viewed in a differentiated manner on a larger scale.

According to Statista, police crime statistics for 2024 indicate a decline in overall crime of 1.7%, which is primarily attributed to the partial legalization of cannabis. However, there are challenges in the area of crime that affect people's sense of security and the clearance rate shows a small increase of 58% compared to last year.

Overall, it is clear that, despite major sporting events, Leipzig is also faced with serious social challenges that need to be overcome. Discussions on topics such as safety and responsibility are therefore more relevant than ever.
