Geocachers save the dragonfly pond: A day for nature in Schönau!

Over 30 geocachers from all over Germany recently took part in the environmental campaign “Reed slaughter at the dragonfly pond” in idyllic Schönau. This initiative was launched by Silvia Scheuplein and Christian Morath (Nes-Laudis) and took place with the active support of the Schönau community. The participants put on waders to remove overgrown reeds in the drained pond and thus make the water surface visible.

During the campaign, which was received with great enthusiasm, Mayor Rahm also actively helped with the removal of the reeds. As part of the teamwork, large piles of reeds were piled up on the bank, demonstrating the success of the effort. At lunchtime the helpers were given a well-deserved snack to appreciate their commitment. The geocachers not only showed commitment to the nature conservation campaign, but also showed attentive behavior: a representative of the fire department thanked them for reporting a wildfire that they had discovered during the work.

Positive cooperation and outlook for the future

The action continued in the afternoon, with additional cubic meters of reeds being removed. Mr. Rahm took over the removal of the cut reeds. The project ended with visible success: the dragonfly pond was significantly upgraded as an excursion destination. Mayor Rahm praised the outstanding commitment of the geocaching community and emphasized the positive cooperation between the community and the geocachers. There is already interest in repeating this successful campaign in the future, which shows how important environmentally conscious action is in the community.

The initiative in Schönau is one of numerous environmental activities initiated by the geocaching community. Geocaching Headquarters is also committed to promoting environmentally friendly practices. In this context, there are six main initiatives, including the well-known *CITO (Cache In Trash Out®)*, which has existed since 2002. This environmental initiative encourages participation in clean-up activities and has already attracted over 363,000 participants across 18,000 events. Geocachers who take part in these events receive souvenirs that honor their commitment.

Promoting sustainability in geocaching

Geocaching HQ also highlights the importance of collaboration between the geocaching community and environmentally conscious organizations. The exchange with local environmental associations and the consideration when hiding geocaches not only enrich the geocacher's experience, but also promote environmental awareness. Additionally, there are programs such as “EarthCaches” that encourage participants to visit geological sites and expand their knowledge of nature, thereby promoting conservation awareness.

Given the successful implementation of the environmental campaign in Schönau and the geocaching community's ongoing efforts towards sustainability, it is hoped that such initiatives will become a regular occurrence and strengthen both the environment and the sense of community.
