In September 2025, a devastating fire in a former inn, which was used as an asylum home, occurred in Schönau in the Mühlkreis (Freistadt district). The building was badly damaged in the incident, while 16 refugees were able to get to safety in good time. Six people had to be taken to the hospital due to suspicion of flue gas poisoning, which underlines the dangers of fire events in such facilities.

The investigation into the cause of the fire showed indications of arson. On the ground floor of the building, garden tools and liquid fuels were stored as possible fire accelerators. The police identified a 40-year-old woman as the main suspect who, however, denied the crime. According to media reports, the home owner was in a precarious financial situation, which raises questions about possible motivation in view of the circumstances. A process date is expected to take place in the next two weeks, with Mayor Herbert Haunschmied expressing his displeasure with the arson. He emphasized the good coexistence with the asylum seekers in the community, which relativizes the social tensions in such cases.

The recommendations include the installation of fire alarm systems according to DIN 14675, which should include smoke detectors in all accommodation rooms and provide emergency lighting in common areas. Furthermore, the use of fire protection doors of the T30RS class for access to stairwells in the basement is advised. In view of the structural differences between buildings and the respective state regulations, a comprehensive fire protection concept is essential to prevent such tragedies in the future.
