Renovation of the Kulturfabrik Werk 2 in Leipzig starts on July 1, 2025!

From July 1, 2025, comprehensive renovation work will begin at the “Werk 2” cultural factory in Leipzig. This measure is expected to take two years and is intended, among other things, for fire protection and to correct structural defects. The total costs of the renovation amount to around 2.7 million euros, which will be financed from a city council application entitled “Plant 2 – continue to renovate”. The aim is to modernize the industrial heritage site in accordance with the current building regulations.

Numerous basic measures will be carried out as part of the renovation. This includes replacing the fire alarm systems and improving the escape route situation by installing new escape route systems. In addition, legally required fire compartments will be set up and barrier-free toilets will be created for visitors to Hall D and the outdoor area. In order to take the listed industrial architecture into account, care is taken to ensure that the structural changes are in harmony with the historical heritage.

Minimal disruption to cultural operations

Despite the extensive work, the aim is to disrupt cultural activities as little as possible. According to Tobias Kobe, head of the cultural office, gaming operations in Hall A will only be paused for around two months in the summer months of 2025 and 2026. The remaining work between September 2025 and June 2026 and after summer 2026 should continue without significant interruptions to event operations. These measures ensure that the Kulturfabrik remains as an important socio-cultural center during the construction period.

Jürgen Ackermann, a representative of “Werk 2”, describes the upcoming renovation as a significant milestone for the cultural site. The planned modernization measures take into account necessary infrastructural improvements to ensure safety and comfort for visitors. The renovations are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, which will make Plant 2 fit for future cross-generational cultural offerings.

MDR reports that this investment should not only increase security, but also increase the attractiveness of the cultural sector. The renovation underlines the city's responsibility to preserve an important cultural heritage while integrating modern standards.

In summary, it can be seen that the renovation of the cultural factory “Werk 2” will have far-reaching positive effects on the future use and preservation of this unique cultural site. The L-IZ highlights that these measures are indispensable in order to meet today's requirements and to ensure the safety of visitors.
