Rumors about Manuel Baum's return to FCA after RB's separation!

On Friday, June 12, 2025, the news situation surrounding Manuel Baum caused a stir. RB Leipzig announced that the contract with the head of the youth department will be terminated by mutual agreement on June 30th. This surprising development opens up new options for the 45-year-old coach, who previously worked for the Saxons. RB Sport managing director Marcel Schäfer expressed his thanks for Baum's commitment and respected his decision for personal reasons. The separation from Baum comes as a surprise as he only joined RB Leipzig in July 2023.

Manuel Baum, born August 30, 1979, is an experienced football coach and former player. He is particularly known for his time at FC Augsburg, where he worked in various positions from July 2014 to April 2019. Among other things, he was head coach of the youth team at the FCA's youth performance center (NLZ) from 2014 to 2016. The sporting successes under his leadership also included being promoted to head coach of the Bundesliga team, which he led from December 2016. Baum managed to lead FCA to 13th place in the Bundesliga in the 2016/17 season and 12th place in the 2017/18 season.

Career and successes at FC Augsburg

Baum took up the coaching position at FC Augsburg after parting ways with Dirk Schuster, when the team was in a dangerous 15th place. Although he was replaced by Martin Schmidt in April 2019, three youth players - Marco Richter, Raphael Framberger and Kevin Danso - made their Bundesliga debuts under his aegis. FCA managing director Michael Ströll has emphasized in the past that he has strong aspirations to increasingly establish his own youth players in the Bundesliga.

In the speculation surrounding a possible return to his former club, FC Augsburg, it has been suggested that Baum could perhaps replace Heinz Moser as head of development. FCA has not officially parted ways with Moser, but his future remains uncertain. Baum also has experience working with youth teams, having coached both the DFB's U20 and U18 national teams.

Stations and perspectives

After his time in Augsburg, Baum joined the DFB U20 team as head coach. His stints also included a short term as coach of the U18 national team. Baum worked for a short time as head coach at Schalke 04, where he started the season in crisis, but was fired after just ten games without a win.

Returning to Munich could open up new opportunities for both Baum and FC Augsburg. After the failed mission in Leipzig and his roots in the FCA coaching team, a return is without a doubt an exciting chapter in his coaching career. Particularly noteworthy is the shared past between Baum and FCA head coach Sandro Wagner, which began at SpVgg Unterhaching.

The next few weeks will show whether Baum will actually return to the structures of FC Augsburg and how the situation surrounding Heinz Moser will develop. These changes could have far-reaching effects on the club's development. FC Augsburg continues to pursue ambitious plans to promote and integrate its own talent.
