Wizz Air withdraws: rats and toilet problems in Leipzig!
Wizz Air has announced that it will completely withdraw from Leipzig/Halle Airport. From mid-September, all flights to Tirana, Bucharest and Varna will be suspended. Although the utilization of Wizz Air flights from Leipzig/Halle was over 80 percent, this does not seem to have been enough for the airline to maintain connecting connections. The withdrawal is part of a broader strategy by Wizz Air, which has focused on German airports in recent years. In a similar move, the airline is also suspending its final services to Skopje and Tirana from Cologne/Bonn Airport, indicating rising location costs that have also affected other airlines such as Ryanair, as reported by Aerotelegraph.
In Leipzig itself there are currently worrying problems that are affecting the quality of life of residents. In Paunsdorf, the community is struggling with a rat problem that is spreading to streets and playgrounds. Many residents feel unwell and express concerns about health risks. The city council has confirmed its intention to find a solution, but details are still pending.
Public toilets and infrastructure projects
In addition, the city of Leipzig is planning to build 16 new public toilets at twelve different locations. However, this project is in danger of failing due to the strained budget situation. The prerequisite for implementation is an approved budget for 2025 and 2026, which is currently still pending. Meanwhile, construction work on the Georg Schwarz Bridges, a project worth 100 million euros, is set to begin. The continued poor condition of the bridges is alarming; their operating license expires in 2028.
A positive ray of hope in the city is the 25th anniversary of the Bayerischer Bahnhof in Leipzig. The establishment opened in 2000 and three employees who have been there since the beginning highlight the pleasant atmosphere that guests enjoy.
