Nandu-Hahn Hannibal as a single father: a chick fights!

Leipzig, Deutschland - In the Leipzig zoo, the birth of two Nandu chicks provides additional attention. Unfortunately, only one of the chicks survived while the other could no longer live. This means that Nandu father Hannibal now acts as a single father. At the moment, the zookeepers are unsure how well Hannibal can master this challenge, since a individually raised chick also has special needs.

zookeeper Janet Pambor, who in the popular documentary series "Elefant, Tiger and Co." reports, found that Hannibal takes care of the surviving chick intensively. Nevertheless, she expresses concerns that the father's focus may not be constant on the chick. The zookeepers have to watch Hannibal closely, especially if he goes out into the outdoor area, because Nandu hens could distract his attention.

challenges and hopes

The situation in the Nandu stable remains tense. According to zookeeper Florian Ludwig, Hannibal's care is less pronounced for the only chick than with several chicks. This ensures additional challenges because the chick has to get enough food while it follows his father and has no time to rest.

In the show, it is also emphasized that the single child situation offers some advantages. This gives the chick more feed and has no siblings with which it would have to compete with food. Daily feeding are thus secured. During the recordings, however, Hannibal showed himself as a attentive father, and the zookeepers are careful about the state of health of the chick, which eats well and is actively moving.

media presence and broadcast dates

The documentary series "Elefant, Tiger and Co." is broadcast on Fridays at 7:50 p.m. in the MDR. It gives the viewers a deep insight into the life of animals in the Leipzig Zoo and the challenges that zookeepers have to cope with every day. The experiences in the zoo and the growing up of the Nandu chick are in particular focus.

The zoo is very popular in public, and the audience is always interested in how the life of the animals will develop. It is to be hoped that Hannibal, as a single father, can show the necessary strength and care to raise his chick.

For animal lovers and breeders, the reading of Dr. Matthias Reinschmidt's book "Breeding of Parrot & Sittichen" will be of interest, which deals with important aspects of bird breeding and keeping, even if this is not immediately connected to the Nandu chicks.

The situation in the zoo is a lively example of the complexity of animal care and the special challenges associated with the rearing of animals in the zoo. It remains exciting to see how the chick and Hannibal will develop.
