On the night of Saturday, July 19, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in Leipzig, in the Mockau-Nord district. At around 3:30 a.m., a VW Transporter and a VW SUV collided at the intersection of Mockauer Strasse, Essener Strasse and Kieler Strasse. The accident was caused by the driver of the VW Touareg, a 42-year-old man, who gave way to the 65-year-old driver of the van. The collision caused the van to flip onto its driver's side while the SUV crashed into a traffic light pole.
Both drivers were injured in the accident and had to be taken to hospital. The driver of the van was initially trapped in the vehicle, but was quickly freed. The fire brigade was on site to secure the scene of the accident and remove any leaking fuel. A drug test of the 42-year-old driver showed positive results for opiates, which is why his driver's license was revoked. The intersection had to be closed for several hours while the accident was being investigated, which also resulted in restrictions on bus traffic.
