On May 27, 2025, the Leipzig Police Department reported several incidents in the city that led to the arrest of a 19-year-old German suspect. According to LZ, the young man is suspected of having committed several acts of robbery and theft against elderly people between April 21st and May 1st, 2025 to have. The police had already asked for information on April 25th about a particularly brutal robbery in Marienbrunn, in which an 83-year-old woman was attacked at an ATM. The perpetrator pushed the woman aside and stole cash.
A total of four crimes were identified in which the victims were between 64 and 91 years old. The total damage is over 1,500 euros. After the suspect, who was arrested for shoplifting in Berlin on May 23, was identified, an arrest warrant was issued that sent him to a juvenile detention center.
Attacks on older people
Another incident occurred on April 26th when the suspect stole almost 500 euros from a 67-year-old woman on Zwickauer Straße. These brutal robberies on elderly people show how dangerous such situations can be for the victim. The investigation is progressing and police are appealing to the public to be vigilant.
Parallel to these incidents, the police were busy with another incident. On May 26, 2025, at 6:20 p.m., a 24-year-old police officer in Leipzig-Stötteritz was injured during an identity check. A 32-year-old woman who had been directed away by the bus driver reacted aggressively, kicking and hitting the police officer. This meant that the officer was unable to work and had to be treated as an outpatient in hospital. The 32-year-old is now being reported for resisting law enforcement officers and assault and was subsequently taken to a specialist hospital.
Robberies on cash-in-transit vehicles
Although the current actions of the Leipzig police are in the area of robberies of elderly people, the topic of robberies of cash-in-transit vehicles also remains explosive. In Germany, these crimes have increased in recent years. According to an analysis provided by Statista, over 1,500 cases were recorded by police between 2014 and 2024, underscoring the need for security measures.
Another case that dominated the headlines was the arrest of a 60-year-old man in the Netherlands suspected of being involved in several cash-in-transit truck robberies. During a robbery at Cologne-Bonn Airport in 2019, a money delivery person was seriously injured by gunfire, highlighting the brutal reality of such crimes. It remains to be seen whether this arrestee is connected to organized crime.
