Lok Leipzig meets Schalke 04 in the DFB Cup – historic duel!

On June 15, 2025, the DFB Cup draw for 1. FC Lok Leipzig was announced: The team will face FC Schalke 04. This encounter is special because Schalke is currently playing in the 2nd Bundesliga and Lok Leipzig is also the current Saxony Cup winner. The last duel between the two teams took place 12 years ago, on July 29, 2013, in a friendly match, which Lok Leipzig lost 1-2. The game was played in front of 4,999 spectators.

The history of the games between Lok Leipzig and Schalke 04 goes back a long way. The last competitive game at an official level took place on September 19, 1995 in the DFB Cup, where Lok Leipzig lost to Schalke 04. This encounter ended 0-1 after then-player Steffen Heidrich missed a penalty that was saved by Jens Lehmann. A striking game was the final of the Tschammer Cup on January 3, 1937, which VfB Leipzig won 2-1.

Cups and competitive games

The upcoming matches in the first round of the DFB Cup will take place from August 15th to 18th, 2025. In addition to Lok Leipzig, Rasenballsport Leipzig also plays, which has to compete against third division team SV Sandhausen. Other games include BFC Dynamo against VfL Bochum and Hallescher FC against FC Augsburg. ZFC Meuselwitz will host Karlsruher SC.

This week the exciting events surrounding the DFB Cup final are also on the agenda. Loud news.de Tens of thousands of fans of the DFB Cup finalists, Arminia Bielefeld and VfB Stuttgart, stream peacefully towards the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The police counted over 15,000 Bielefeld fans at Alexanderplatz and around 5,000 Stuttgarters at Breitscheidplatz. Former national coach Jogi Löw, who won the DFB Cup with VfB in 1997, ensured that the atmosphere was further heated up on a stage.

The cup final will take place at 8 p.m. in front of a sold-out crowd of 74,036 spectators. The demand for tickets significantly exceeds the available seats, as both clubs could sell many more than the 24,000 tickets made available to them by the DFB.

The DFB Cup not only offers exciting encounters for the participating teams, but also for the loyal fans who are looking forward to the big event. A concrete example of this is the VfB fan who plans to watch the game in a bar with other supporters, while several others are desperately looking for tickets and holding up signs that say “Looking for a cup ticket”.
