A 74-year-old senior citizen from Leipzig became the victim of an unscrupulous fraud on Saturday evening, in which she lost more than 100,000 euros. The fraudster was a police officer in a phone call and warned the woman of an alleged Romanian thieves. In order to bring her valuables to safety, he advised her to find a safe place for her jewelry, as they should be robbed the next day. Full of trust in the perpetrator's supposed information, the senior gave him high-quality jewelry at an agreed meeting in the Center Northwest of Leipzig. The wrong policeman then moved away from the location of the handover. The police described this case as unusual because such sums are usually quickly recognized. In June, false police officers had already brought a 97-year-old man in Leipzig for several ten thousand euros. The specialist commissioner for fraudulent offenses has taken the investigation in this current case and in further investigative proceedings for measurement, such as the LVZ.

Extensive investigations with regard to gang scams have now led to the arrests of three suspects. These people are suspected of being involved in several fraud cases in Germany. The investigation was promoted in particular by the priority prosecutor for cybercrime Leipzig and the investigative group "Schock" of the Leipzig criminal police. Originally, the investigation was intensified after an attempted fraud on a 62-year-old woman from Leipzig, who took place on January 6, 2025. This received a call from a wrong police officer who informed her about alleged burglaries in her residential area. A male accomplice also introduced himself as a police officer and asked about cash and valuables. When the injured party became suspicious and the door did not open, she informed the police, who was able to arrest the collecting perpetrator, a 23-year-old man with a Turkish background.

In the subsequent investigation, two other suspects, both male and at the age of 24 and 25, were identified as a "logistician" and "client" within the fraud gang.
